Obituary for Harry Haas
Harry Haas, of Harleysville, formerly a long-time resident of Hatfield, passed away on Sunday, February 17 at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones. He was the husband of the late Ruth J. (Taylor) Haas, who died in 2008. He was 87.
Born in Germantown, he was the son of the late Pauline Haas.
Mr. Haas was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served aboard the U.S.S. Vicksburg during World War II. With his shipmates, he was a witness to the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima.
Harry had been employed for 42 years by Merck, Sharp and Dohme, then later Merck, of West Point.
Mr. Haas was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Hatfield, where he had served as an usher and a pitcher on the church softball team.
Harry was formerly a volunteer with the Hatfield Fire Department. He was also a member of the Lansdale VFW Post 32 and the Hatfield American Legion Post 933. A 57- year member of the Nase-Kraft American Legion Post 255, of Sellersville, he participated in their Shuffleboard League.
A keen sportsman, Harry enjoyed baseball, tennis, bowling, and swimming. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with his family.
He is survived by his three daughters: Dorothy C. Behrend and her husband, Steven, of Nottingham, England; Brenda Haas Williams and her husband, Richard, of East Lyme, CT; R. Jeannette Snyder and her husband, Jim, of Leland, NC; five grandchildren: Joshua Hunsberger; Louise Behrend; Emma Dacres; Jacob Snyder; Travis Williams; three great-grandsons: Tyler Dacres; Joel Dacres; and Luke Hunsberger; and his partner, Barbara Obringer, of Harleysville.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Harry C. Haas, who died in 2004.
His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 23 in Grace Lutheran Church, 25 West Broad Street, Hatfield, PA 19440. Family and friends may call at the church Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to time of service.
Interment with military honors will follow in Hatfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Harry’s name to the Hatfield Fire Department, 75 North Market Street, Hatfield, PA 19440.
