Shirley A. Sprole

Shirley A. Sprole, of Warminster, PA, formerly a long-time resident of Perkasie, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024. She was 95.

She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Donald Q. Sprole for nearly 71 years until his death in 2019.

Born in Sellersville, she was the daughter of the late Ralph L. and Helen (Warris) Weiss. Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Sell-Perk High School. She would later earn her B.S. Ed from Bucknell University and her M.Ed. from Kutztown University.

A beloved teacher, Mrs. Sprole took great delight in educating her students so that they might achieve their ultimate growth and potential. Employed for 34 years by the Pennridge School District, Mrs. Sprole taught the Opportunity (Special Education), 5th grade classes, and later 3rd grade. In 1966, she started the Title I Reading Program with Dr. Patricia Guth and continued as a Reading Specialist until her retirement in 1989.

As a long-time member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Perkasie, Shirley was active with the Women’s Quilting group. A vitally dynamic influence in the Upper Bucks Lioness Club for more than 30 years, and a past president, Shirley was also a member of the Perkasie Historical Society.

An avid reader, Shirley also enjoyed gardening and knitting. With her husband she had enjoyed traveling to locations throughout the United States and abroad. Most importantly, Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. In later years, when no longer able to travel and visit, she continued to maintain these lifelong close ties through faithful correspondence.

Mrs. Sprole is survived by her two daughters: Renee Sprole, and her husband, Stephen Poot, and Holly Ketterer, and her husband, Scott; three grandchildren: Jessica Lynn Poot, Janelle Marie Bombard and her spouse, Taylor Bombard, and Rachel Lynn Ketterer; and a great-grandson, Orion Carter Bombard.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, in St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, 110 North 6th Street, Perkasie, PA 18944, where a visitation will be held from 10:45 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in Sellersville Cemetery.
