Carol Ann Spanninger, of Summerville, SC, formerly a long-time resident of Perkasie, passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, in Summerville Medical Center. She was 82.
She was the beloved wife of Robert L. Spanninger.
Carol was the daughter of the late Elwood and Evelyn (Stull) Detweiler. A 1957 graduate of Pennridge High School, Carol had played field hockey and was a cheerleader. She later graduated from Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
She had been employed for more than 30 years at Doylestown Hospital, working first as a floor nurse and ending her career as an IV team nurse responsible for IV therapy needs throughout the hospital. Carol had loved her job and the time spent with hospital colleagues.
Carol was a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie, where she had been active with WELCA and adult education classes and had volunteered with the counting team and as a lector. After Carol and Bob moved to South Carolina in 2014, they joined St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Summerville.
Always civic-minded, Carol was a member of the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary and coordinated the annual Grand View Lawn Fete for many years. She was also a member of the Woman’s Club of Perkasie and served on the Perkasie Cemetery Board. For many years, Carol was also a member of the Doylestown Tennis Club.
An avid reader, Carol was a member or founding member of several book clubs in both Pennsylvania and South Carolina. She had delighted in working in her gardens and watching her plants grow and flourish. A gifted seamstress, Carol could sew anything from clothing to curtains. With her husband, she had enjoyed taking dance lessons until they were extremely talented ballroom dancers.
In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by her daughter, Kelly Spanninger and her wife, Joyce Compton, of Pittsburgh; her son, R. Sean Spanninger, of St. Augustine, FL; two grandchildren: Jocelyn LeDonne (Billyjoe), of Slippery Rock, and Nathan Gaumond, of Pittsburgh; two great-grandchildren: Carter LeDonne and Giovanni LeDonne, both of Slippery Rock; a brother, Dennis Detweiler, and his wife, Wanda; a brother-in-law, Phillip Spanninger, and his wife, Janet; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jon Detweiler and Guy Detweiler, and her in-laws, Florence (Worthington) Spanninger Pennington and Robert Pennington.
Her Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 28, in St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20 Dill Avenue, Perkasie, PA 18944, where the family will greet visitors from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Interment in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Perkasie will be private at the convenience of the family.
