John M. Schumacher

July 18, 1942 — December 28, 2008

John M. Schumacher, 66, of Sellersville, formerly of North Wales, passed away on Sunday, December 28, at his residence. He was the husband of Frances M. (Gergar) Schumacher for 19 years.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Michael George and Mary (Bragg) Schumacher.

Mr. Schumacher was a U. S. Army veteran, having served stateside.

Following his military service, he graduated from barber school in Philadelphia, attaining the rank of Master Barber.

John had owned and operated his own barber shop in Sellersville for 25 years.

An independent diving coach for over 25 years, Mr. Schumacher worked at many local high schools, helping to train young divers. He was also affiliated with the North Penn Aquatic Club in the 1970’s. His proudest moment centered on the training of future Olympic Bronze Medalist, Chris Seufert, of the North Penn AAU Swimming Team.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville. He was also a member of American Legion Nase-Kraft Post No. 255, and a lifetime member of the VFW Forrest Lodge Post 245, both of Sellersville.

John enjoyed fishing and boating.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schumacher is survived by a son and a daughter; a brother, Michael Schumacher and his wife, Aida, Flourtown; a sister, Patricia Winterer, Del Ray, Florida; a brother-in-law, Louis Gergar and his wife, Ann, Waterford, Michigan; five nieces, Gabriella, Julia, Sarah, Elizabeth and Hilary; and his cat “Precious.”

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at 12:000 Noon in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville, PA. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations in his name be made to Grand View Hospice, 700 Lawn Avenue, Sellersville, PA 18960.
