Nicholas Scebes

Nicholas Scebes, of Sellersville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 10 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Vasso (Asimakopoulos) Scebes. They would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on December 26. He was 62.

Born in Samos, Greece, he was the son of the late Dimitrios and Konstantina (Argiris) Scebes.

In 1971 Nick came to the United States. He maintained a fierce pride in and an intense connection to his Hellenic roots and Greek Orthodox faith throughout his life.

Nick worked hard his entire life, doing everything from working in a steel mill to painting houses to serving as a shipyard mechanic. He eventually found his niche in the restaurant business, working his way up from dishwasher to cook to restaurant owner. For the past 15 years, along with his wife, he had owned and operated the A & N Diner in Sellersville.

He attended St. Philip Orthodox Christian Church, of Souderton, where he was active in many church activities and festivals.

Nick was an associate member of the Sellersville Fire Department, volunteering with the annual carnivals. Along with his wife, he was the recipient of the fire department’s 2006 Citizen of the Year Award.

A member of the American Legion Nase-Kraft Post No. 255, Sellersville, Nick was also a member of the Branch Valley Fish, Game, and Forestry Association, of Perkasie. He was also a past president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association.

In those rare moments in which Nick was not working, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Known for his quick wit and his love of a good joke, Nick gave his help generously and quietly, asking nothing in return and no recognition for his actions. When Nick became your friend, he was a friend for life.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Scebes is survived by his children: James Scebes, of Saylorsburg; Tina Scebes, of Easton; Edith Scebes, of Effort; six grandchildren: Alexander; Christopher; Nicholas; Kimberly; Bethany; and Paul; a sister, Evaggelia Scebes; her husband, Ralph; and their son, Harris, of Samos, Greece; his step-children: Georgia Hatzis Roberts and her husband, Jonno, of Los Angeles, CA; Joanna Hatzis, of Washington, D.C.; Nicholas Hatzis and his wife, Mia, of Easton; three step-grandchildren: Leonidia; Persephoni; and Lola; his brother-in-law, Aristidis Asimakopoulos and his wife, Aggeliki; and two nephews, Panagiotis and George.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Demetrious.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 15, at St. Philip Orthodox Christian Church, 1970 Clearview Road, Souderton, PA 18964, where a visitation will be held from 4- 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 14 and from 10- 11 a.m. on Monday.

Interment will be in the adjoining St. Philip Orthodox Cemetery.
