Geraldine Ella (Thompson) Powers, of the Frederick Mennonite Community, formerly of Sellersville and Salem, New Jersey, entered peacefully into rest, surrounded by her family, Sunday, May 26. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph Leslie Powers for 64 years until his death on June 4, 2009. She was 90.
Born in Salem, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late David Allen and Sara Jane (Coles) Thompson. She was a 1940 graduate of the George School, Newtown. Geraldine later attended Cooper Hospital School of Nursing, Camden, NJ.
Mrs. Powers had worked as a soda fountain attendant at Woolworth’s 5 & 10; as a chemical assistant at DuPont, in Deepwater, NJ; as a cafeteria worker in Hilltown Elementary School; and as a clerk in Levine’s Fabric Store, Montgomeryville. She was also self-employed as a seamstress and home care aide. She had operated a cleaning service and child care business as well.
She had been a member of St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie, where she had taught Sunday school and volunteered on Altar Guild. Previously, she was a member of the Salem Quaker Meetinghouse, Salem, NJ.
Geraldine was a former member of the Silverdale Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
An animal and bird lover, Geraldine enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. She also liked crocheting, sewing, canning and freezing. With her husband, she had loved camping and traveling, especially to Barbados and Hawaii.
Mrs. Powers is survived by a daughter: Linda J. Moore, of Quakertown; a son, Leslie Ralph Powers and his wife, Dawn, of New Britain; four grandchildren: Christopher L. Moore, of Nazareth; Trevor Moore and his wife, Shayne, of Pottstown; Gretchen McFarland and her husband, Sean, of East Norriton; Andria Powers, of New Britain; a great-grandson, Chance Scott Moore, of Pottstown; a brother, David Allen Thompson, of Ocean City, NJ; and a sister, Eleanor Thompson Barber, of Charlotte, NC.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Thompson and Charlotte Thompson Bowers; two brothers, Richard Thompson and Francis Owen Thompson; and her son-in-law, Lowell G. Moore.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 1, in Oaktree Auditorium of Frederick Living, formerly the Frederick Mennonite Community, 2849 Big Road (Route 73), Frederick, PA 19435, where family and friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service, with refreshments following the service. Interment will be private.
