Elizabeth “Betty” L. Mortimer, formerly of Chalfont, Perkasie, and Philadelphia, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in St. Mary’s Manor, Lansdale. She was 100.
She was the wife of the late Dr. George J. Mortimer III for 25 years until his death in 1981.
Born in Davis, West Virginia, she was the ninth of the twelve children born to the late Albert and Dorothy (Harper) Degler. Betty grew up in West Virginia, Florida, and Ohio, graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School, in Newark, Ohio.
Betty was a U.S. Navy Wave, having served during World War II.
Following their marriage, Betty and George settled in Philadelphia.
Although primarily a homemaker, Betty had also been employed as a dental hygienist prior to her marriage.
Mrs. Mortimer was formerly a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville.
Betty had always enjoyed gardening at her home.
Mrs. Mortimer is survived by her children: George J. Mortimer IV and his wife, Patricia, Theresa A. Uenas and her husband, Eric, Susan M. Millinghausen and her husband, Bob, and Dorothy J. Mortimer; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Joseph Degler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James M. Mortimer; two brothers, Rolland Degler and Jack Degler; and eight sisters: Kathryn, Marie, Evelyn, Sue, Lois, Nellie, Mildred, and Joan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, at the Chapel of St. Mary’s Manor, 701 Lansdale Avenue, Lansdale, PA 19446, where a visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Interment with military honors will follow in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty’s name may be made to a Catholic charity of one’s choice.
