Mary Jo McLane, a long-time resident of Prospectville, passed away peacefully of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her family, at her residence Monday, April 18, 2016. She was 92.
She was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Rex McLane, Jr. for 39 years until his tragic death in an auto accident on their wedding anniversary in 1984.
Born in Bloomfield, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Raymond R. and Nina (Borter) Stone. The beauty of the rural southern Indiana countryside where the family farmed would influence Jo for the rest of her life, fostering her love for natural landscapes, birds, and wildflowers.
Mary Jo was a 1944 graduate of Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, majoring in home economics and English. There, she met Stanley Rex McLane, Jr., whom she would marry in 1945 before his departure for war-time service.
Jo taught home economics and English in Indiana until beginning her family.
When her children were young, she volunteered as a Scout den mother.
An accomplished seamstress and homemaker, Mrs. McLane was an avid reader, who also kept detailed diaries, gifts that her children now cherish. She always had beautiful handwriting and spoke perfect English.
Jo also enjoyed her vegetable garden, walks in the woods filled with wildflowers, watching the birds at the feeders, and playing with the kittens that roamed the house.
She was an inspiration to all she met, with a positive attitude that seemed to rub off on everyone. Even to the end, she would give a smile and a wink to say, “I love you.” A supportive wife and a wonderful mother, Mary Jo may now be gone, but the world was a better place because of the 92 years she spent among us.
Mrs. McLane is survived by her three children: Anna L. Edling and her husband, Charles Malinauskas, of Chalfont; Susan McLane and her husband, Andy Phillips, of Prospectville; Zachary Stone McLane and his wife, Cecelia, of West Rockhill Township; a grandson, Austin Cody Edling, State College; and her beloved cat, “Sunkist.”
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Dugger Letsinger and Katherine Branstetter.
Services are private.
