Catherine H. (Schnabel) Martinez

Catherine H. Martinez, 95, of Astoria, New York, formerly of Sellersville, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens, Long Island City, New York. She was the wife of the late Alphonse Martinez for 38 years.
Born in Sellersville, she was the daughter of the late John Peter and Katherine (Schramm) Schnabel.
Mrs. Martinez graduated from Sally Rodgers’ one room schoolhouse, West Rockhill Township, and then went on to be the valedictorian of the Class of 1929 at Sellersville High School. Following her graduation, she attended Lansdale Business School for two years.
During the Depression years of the 1930’s, she traveled to New York, where she obtained a secretarial position and met her future husband.
A homemaker most of her life, Mrs. Martinez and her family returned to the old family homestead, “Walhalla,” West Rockhill Township, every summer for extended visits.
She was a long-time, active member of the Presbyterian Church of Astoria, Astoria, NY, and she also worshipped at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Almont when visiting Sellersville.
She is survived by her two daughters: Josephine DeStefano and her husband, James; Anita Martinez and her partner, William Zalesky, all of New York City; four grandchildren: Andrew DeStefano, Anita DeStefano, Catherine Doyle, Joyce Novak; seven great-grandchildren: James, Connor, Jamie, Ryan, Joseph, Carolyn, and Dylan; and one sister, Olive Provost, of Tennessee. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Schnabel and Carl Schnabel.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday morning, December 30 at 10:000 AM at the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville, PA. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Monday afternoon, December 29, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM; Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM; and Tuesday morning from 9:00 AM until time of service. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Presbyterian Church of Astoria, 23-35 Broadway, Astoria, NY 11106 or to Jerusalem Lutheran Church (Almont), 733 Ridge Road, Sellersville, PA 18960.
