Vernon R. Markley, 91, a resident of West Rockhill Township for over 60 years, formerly of Pennsburg, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at the Lutheran Community at Telford. He was the beloved husband of the late Florence M. (Bardman) Markley, who died in 2001.
Born in Pennsburg, he was the son of the late J. Vincent and Elsie (Eck) Markley.
He was a 1935 graduate of Pennsburg High School, where he was on the football team. He was an Eagle Scout. During his youth he was also a member of the Red Hill Band, playing both the flute and the piccolo.
Mr. Markley earned a degree in metallurgy from Temple University.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with both the 34th and 88th Infantry Divisions in Sicily and Italy during World War II. During the occupation of Italy, he was responsible for water testing and treatment.
For over 40 years until his retirement in 1983, Mr. Markley had been employed by the U.S. Gauge Division of Ametek, Inc., Sellersville, where he was a metallurgist in the lab and a production supervisor of aircraft instruments.
Elected as a West Rockhill Township supervisor for 13 years, he helped to establish James Memorial Park and the recycling program. He was a member of the Joint Recreation Board for Holiday House Pool. Mr. Markley had also served on the Pennridge School Board.
He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ridge Valley, West Rockhill Township. He was a Mason and also a member of the former Pennridge Jaycees.
A lifelong avid photographer, Vernon won several awards in competitions. He also enjoyed skiing and tinkering with anything mechanical.
He is survived by his children: Jeffrey V. Markley, and his wife, Penny, of West Rockhill Township; Bruce R. Markley, and his wife, Stephanie, of Sellersville; and Cindy Sieracki, of Montclair, PA; six grandchildren: Kara, Jon, Rachel, Christopher, Jamey, and Carly; a brother: Meryl Markley, and his wife, Marilyn, of Pennsburg; and a sister: Anna Mae Kleinbach, of Telford.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 10:30 AM in Frieden’s Union Cemetery, Route 63 and Church Road, Sumneytown, PA 18084. His Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 PM in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (Ridge Valley), 910 Allentown Road, Sellersville, PA 18960.
