Richard S. “Dick” Madden, 87, of Harleysville, formerly of Audubon, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township. He was the beloved husband of Mary Jane (Morgan) Madden for 63 years.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Walter A. Madden and Eleanor (Scott) Madden. Dick was a 1943 graduate of Norristown High School.
A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Madden served in both the European and Pacific Theaters.
With a professional career in newspaper advertising, Dick had been employed by the Norristown Times Herald and, most recently, as advertising service manager at the Reading Eagle Times, retiring in 1990 after 25 years.
Mr. Madden had been a long- time member of Haws Avenue United Methodist Church, of Norristown, where he and his wife volunteered in the soup kitchen.
Dick was a member of Spring Ford Country Club, Royersford, where he was a passionate golfer with three holes-in-one to his credit. Dick and Mary Jane had a mutual love of golf, leading them to spend many winters enjoying the links in Sedona, AZ and to frequent attendance at The Masters, in Augusta, GA.
Dick was also very handy around the house and bowled in a bowling league. He had also earned his Senior Lifesaving Certificate in Water Safety.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Madden is survived by his two children: Jeffrey Madden and his wife, Colleen, of Royersford; Debra J. Cunningham and her husband, Michael, of Philadelphia; three grandchildren: Nathan Madden and his wife, Anna, of Westfield, NJ; Kim and Drew Madden; and Abbey Madden, all of Royersford; three great-grandsons: Drexel; Luke; and Chase; and his beloved dog, “Casey.”
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 21, 2012, in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville, PA 18960.
Interment in Sellersville Cemetery with full military honors will follow after the memorial service. All are invited to a luncheon following conclusion of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
