Dalton M. Kern

Dalton M. Kern, 93, a long-time resident of Sellersville, formerly of Coopersburg, passed away Monday, December 1 at Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township. He was the beloved husband of the late Myrtle (Nase) Kern and the long-time companion of the late Jessie M. Melott.

Born in Coopersburg, he was a son of the late Russell W. and Edna (Maurer) Kern. He was a graduate of Allentown High School.

He had been employed for over 27 years as a realtor, owning and operating his own firm for 8 years; working 8 years for Kratz Real Estate, Souderton; and 11 years for Monaghan Real Estate, Quakertown, from which he retired in 1990. He continued to work part-time in real estate after his retirement. Prior to this, he had worked 8 years for Hartman Trailer, Perkasie and 10 years for Mann’s Grocery Store, Sellersville. During World War II he worked as a welder for Kramp’s Shipyard, Philadelphia. As a young man, he was also employed by a luggage factory and hosiery mill, both in Quakertown, and with Mack Trucks, Allentown.

Dalton was extremely involved in community events. He was a lifetime member of the Coopersburg Fire Company No. 1; the VFW Forrest Lodge 245, Sellersville; and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #1539, Sellersville. He was also a member of the Branch Valley Fish, Game and Forestry Association, Perkasie; the Bucks County Pointer Club; and the Coopersburg Historical Society.

A founding member of the North Penn Beagle Club, Haycock Township, he raised and trained champion pointers, spaniels, and beagles. He excelled with German shorthair pointers, winning many awards. He later officiated at and judged canine field trials on horseback.

Mr. Kern had attended St. Paul’s UCC, Sellersville for many years.

Dalton was well-known and well-liked. He will be missed greatly by his family, many friends and business acquaintances.

He is survived by two step-daughters, four grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, three nieces and three nephews.

In addition to his wife and longtime companion, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Darwin, and Richard Kern and two sisters, Dorothy Sorver and Pauline Knappenberger.

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday morning, December 6 at 11:00 AM in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville. Family and friends may call Saturday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Interment in Sellersville Cemetery.
