Matthias "Matt" Huprich

January 8, 1937 — February 8, 2016

Matthias “Matt” Huprich, of Quakertown, formerly of Sellersville, Langhorne, and Philadelphia, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016, in LifeQuest Nursing Center, Milford Township. He was 79.

He was the beloved husband of Elisabeth (Reidl) Huprich for 58 years.

Born in Romania and raised in Austria, he was the son of the late Matthias and Maria (Kraus) Huprich. Matt came to the United States in 1955.

Mr. Huprich had owned and operated an ecclesiastical and architectural woodworking business, a trade he had learned in Austria. He crafted pews and ecclesiastical chairs for many local churches. Along with his son, he had also designed and built the chair, two deacons’ chairs, and two kneeling benches used by Pope Benedict XVI during his 2008 papal visit to the United States. All are now on permanent display as papal artifacts in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.

He was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Langhorne.

Matt was also a member of several local German Clubs and had supported the FOP.

An avid soccer player for 40 years, Matt had played on teams both in Austria and the United States. He had also enjoyed skiing. Additionally, he had earned a black belt in karate and was also trained in Judo and Jiu Jitsu. A talented accordion player, he had often entertained at dances. He had loved dancing and, while in Austria, he and his sister had won several dance competitions.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Huprich is survived by his children, Elisabeth “Lis” Crossan and her husband, Wally, of Coopersburg, and John M. Huprich, of Quakertown; six grandchildren: Lauren Scholler; Samantha Kale and her husband, Trevor; Alexa Crossan; Shannon Crossan; Matthew Huprich; Sarah Huprich; a great-grandson, Chase; and a brother, John Huprich, and his wife, Maria, of Mansfield, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Huprich, and a sister, Maria John.

His funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, February 12, in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville, PA 18960, where a visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of service.

Interment will follow in Sellersville Cemetery.
