J. Robert "Bob" Derstine, 78, of East Rockhill Township, formerly of Hilltown, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 27, 2011, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Fluck) Derstine for 55 years.
Born in Blooming Glen, he was the son of the late Howard and Anna (Clymer) Derstine. Bob was a 1951 graduate of Hilltown High School.
He had served two years in Agricultural Service at Greystone State Hospital, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.
Mr. Derstine had been employed as a carpenter at Branch Valley Associates, formerly of Sellersville, for 31 years, retiring in 1998. Prior to that, he had worked for Clayton Pritchard, of Perkasie.
A man of great faith, Bob was a long-time active member of Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek, Telford, volunteering in many capacities. He served as financial secretary and on the Property Committee, where he helped with the church grove and the cemetery.
Mr. Derstine also volunteered with the church’s Short Term Missions Committee, helping with reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Katrina in North Carolina and Biloxi, Mississippi.
He had also served on the Hilltown High School reunion committee.
Bob loved gardening, especially vegetables, and had recently started to enjoy baking. He also loved to feed and watch birds, especially his hummingbirds.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Derstine is survived by his four children: Donna J. Steich, and her husband, James, of Quakertown; Duane A. Derstine, and his wife, Allison, of Hilltown; Dawn M. Fischer, and her husband, David, of Quakertown; and Deanne R. Zoellin, and her husband, Karl, of Bedminster; 11 grandchildren; and a brother, J. Larry Derstine, and his wife, Althea, of Bridgewater Corners, Vermont.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Moyer, and a brother, Mark Derstine.
His funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, August 31, 2011, in Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek, 171 Church Road, Telford, PA 18969. The family will greet friends after the service.
Interment will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family.
