Ralph W. Close, 94, of the Rockhill Mennonite Community, West Rockhill Township, formerly of North Wales, entered into rest on Wednesday morning, February 1, 2012, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Christina (Harris) Close for 68 years.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Frederick J. and Lillian (Hartzell) Close. He was a graduate of Mastbaum Vo-Tech High School, Philadelphia.
After graduation, Ralph had been employed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a structural draftsman, responsible for the design of battleship components.
In the early 1950’s he co-established the Pennsylvania Drafting Corporation, in Trooper, where he and his partner did structural drafting and detailing for bridge and building projects for many years.
A resident at the Rockhill Community for 10 years, Mr. Close volunteered as a driver and in the weekly produce store. At the Community, he and his wife sang in the choir, and Ralph enjoyed working in the wood shop.
Ralph had been a long-time active member of Grace Baptist Church, of Blue Bell. He had also been a member of the Upper Gywnedd Lions Club.
In his earlier years, Ralph enjoyed boating with a local club. He was an avid reader and gardener. Ralph also enjoyed playing and coaching in pinochle, shuffleboard and puzzles. He also delighted in performing card tricks. He especially loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Close is survived by his two sons: Steven F. Close and his wife Joanne, of Harleysville; David F. Close and his wife, Susannne, of Quakertown; five grandchildren: Tara; Stephanie; Jennifer; Kevin; and Geena; and two great-grandchildren: Logan and Emma.
Ralph was preceded in death by two brothers: Lewis Close and Revere “Bud” Close.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 6, 2012, in the Rockhill Mennonite Community Chapel, 3250 State Road, Sellersville, PA 18960, where a calling hour will be held from 10:00 A.M. to time of service.
Interment will be held in George Washington Memorial Park, Plymouth Meeting.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rockhill Mennonite Community, 3250 State Road, Sellersvillle, PA 18960.
