Raymond D. Byers, Jr., of Perkasie, formerly of Sellersville, passed away Wednesday, February 13, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Florence A. (Harman) Byers for 65 years. He was 86.
Born in Perkasie, he was the son of the late Raymond D., Sr. and Lillian (Dauernheim) Byers. Ray was a 1944 graduate of Sell-Perk High School.
A proud U. S. Navy veteran, Mr. Byers served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, stationed aboard the SS Orbis, where he was an armed guard in an elite security unit.
Raymond had been employed as a machinist and drill press operator for 38 years at the former U. S. Gauge Division, Ametek, Inc., Sellersville, retiring in 1988.
He was a long-time member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville.
Ray was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1539, of Sellersville and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved to watch John Wayne movies. Ray’s fondest childhood memory was being crowned as Sellersville’s Marbles Champion.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Byers is survived by his children: James Byers and his wife, Roseann, of Quakertown; George Byers and his wife, Janet, of Parachute, CO; David Byers, Sr. and his wife , Pam, of Pennsburg; Frances Glassmeyer, and her husband, Ed, of Quakertown; Deborah Shewell, and her husband, Rick, of Pennsburg; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa A. Hoff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 18 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 North Main Street, Sellersville 18960. Family and friends may call from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church Monday morning.
Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church at the address above or to the Sellersville Fire Department, P.O. Box 315, Sellersville, PA 18960.
