Helen D. (Schmidt) Berdell

June 6, 1923 — December 30, 2009

Helen Dorothy Berdell, 86, a lifelong resident of Perkasie, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at the Lutheran Community, Telford.

Born in 1923 in Sellersville, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Margaret (Ehle) Schmidt, German immigrants to Pennsylvania in the early 20th century.

Helen grew up on the family farm working beside her brothers, Ralph and Alfred, and riding her black stallion, "Pepper."

She was a graduate of Sell-Perk High School.

In 1943, Helen married Russell Warren Berdell, who later enlisted as an Army reconnaissance infantryman during World War II. Russell died in 1995.

A homemaker, Helen later worked as a physical therapist after both children departed for college. She was employed in the skilled nursing wing of the Lutheran Community, Telford, for 35 years. Many patients attributed their recovery to her limitless patience and dedication.

A lifelong member of St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sellersville, Mrs. Berdell practiced her faith daily through kindness and giving to others. She also actively supported the American Heart Association, the Cancer Society, and the Diabetes Foundation.

She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, drawing, and John Denver. Later in life, she traveled throughout Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii.

Helen was a loving wife, a "model by example" mother, and a treasured friend. While Helen was often viewed as a perfectionist by family members, the words that best capture her full life are kindness, patience, and determination.

Mrs. Berdell is survived by her son, James Berdell, and his longtime partner, Carolynn Sherby, of Atherton, California; her youngest and devoted son, Robert Berdell, of Palm Springs, California; and her granddaughter, Lauren Podoll, and her husband, Josh, of San Francisco, California.

In addition to Mr. Berdell, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph Schmidt and Alfred Schmidt.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 11:00 AM in St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 25 East Church Street, Sellersville, PA 18960. Friends and family may call Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service.

Interment will be in Sellersville Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address or by performing an act of kindness for others.
