Helen Mary (Zimolzak) Balla

July 15, 1924 — July 28, 2015

Helen Mary Balla, of Telford, a native of Glen Lyon, passed away at her residence in the Lutheran Community at Telford on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. She was 91.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert George Balla, who died in 1997.

Born in Glen Lyon (Luzerne County), she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Helen (Textoris) Zimolzak.

After graduating from Newport Township High School in 1942, Helen attended Wilkes-Barre Business College, receiving certificates in shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping.

Mrs. Balla had been employed with Collins and Collins; Seaboard Financial; and W.T. Grant, all in the Wilkes- Barre area.

Formerly a member of St. John’s Slovak Lutheran Church, Nanticoke, where she had taught Sunday school, she was currently a member of St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie.

Mrs. Balla was a 58-year member of the Nanticoke Chapter #174 of the Order of Eastern Star. In 1984, she became a past Worthy Matron. She had also volunteered with the Head Start program in Wilkes-Barre.

Helen loved to sing, possessing a beautiful alto voice. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her four grandchildren.

She is survived by her two children: R. Jeffrey Balla, of Yorktown, VA; Jane L. Walker and her husband, David A., of Perkasie; and four grandchildren: Abigail, David, Hannah, and Nathanael Walker.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Colonel Frank Zimolzak, USMC.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday August 3, 2015, in St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20 Dill Ave., Perkasie, PA 18944, where a visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Following a luncheon in Perkasie, interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. The Nanticoke Eastern Star #174 will conduct a service at the cemetery at 3:15 pm .

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, at the address above, or to St. John's Slovak Lutheran Church, 604 South Hanover Street, Nanticoke, PA 18634 or to Wyoming Valley Children’s Association, 1133 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, PA 18704.
