Obituary for Joseph A. Schmitz

Joseph A. Schmitz, 88, of Quakertown, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Southampton, PA.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph H. and Wilhelmina (Mueller) Schmitz.

Joe graduated from LaSalle High School before going on to graduate from LaSalle College with a degree in Physics. He completed his education by earning a Master’s degree from Temple University.

Joe then launched a successful career as an engineer, first working at the Franklin Institute Research Labs in Philadelphia before moving on to spend the rest of his career as an engineer for the Defense Department. After a stint at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, he began a long tenure working in the Fire Control Department at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, retiring in 1995 as the Supervisory General Engineer.

A lifelong outdoors enthusiast, Joe was a member of many clubs that spoke to this interest, beginning with the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. An avid and accomplished skier, Joe was a member of the Huntingdon Valley Ski Club, with whom he enjoyed many a trip. Keenly interested in history and geography, Joe loved traveling to parts unknown, especially if it involved hiking or bicycling.

Enthusiastic and filled with spirit, Joe will be sorely missed by everyone who filled and enriched his life.

Joe is survived by his two daughters, Nicole Schmitz and Marlynne Fox, along with son-in-law, Eddie Fox, and his treasured longtime girlfriend, Lois Gardner. A devoted grandfather, he is also survived by his grandson, Baker Fox, and his granddaughter, Reese Fox, both of whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 30 years, Kathy (Schuster) Schmitz, and his sister, Eileen Foote.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Thursday, May 11, in St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 N. Main St., Sellersville, PA 18960, with a visitation from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m.

Interment will follow in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Schmitz’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
