Obituary for Stephen Yurchak

Stephen Yurchak, a long-time resident of Sellersville, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, in Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township. He was 90.

He was the beloved husband of Janice E. (Hill) Yurchak for 50 years until her death in 2011.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was the son of the late Metro and Anna (Thear) Yurchak. Stephen was a 1949 graduate of Nesquehoning High School.

Mr. Yurchak later joined the U. S. Navy during the Korean War, serving as a Petty Officer aboard the USS Achernar KA 53 from 1952-1954 and the Rhine River Patriot Bremerhaven Germany USN AB-913 from 1954-1956.

Upon his return to the States, Stephen enrolled at East Stroudsburg State College, receiving his B.Sc. degree in 1959. He would later earn his M.Ed. from Temple University in 1967.

First employed as a social studies teacher in the Pennridge School District, at both the junior high and high school levels from 1959-1968, Mr. Yurchak would begin his administrative career at Quakertown Senior High School in 1968 as assistant principal. For the next four years, he served as principal at the high school.

Mr. Yurchak also worked with Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 from 1975-1991. Actively committed to a positive educational experience for all students, Mr. Yurchak was elected to the Pennridge School Board, where he served from 1973-1991.

After eighteen years as an assistant principal and middle school principal in the Upper Perkiomen School District, Mr. Yurchak retired in 1991.

An avid reader, Stephen had also enjoyed international travel, including a trip to the Alaskan Iditarod. Other favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, and baseball. He had volunteered as an umpire for local baseball and softball leagues.

Mr. Yurchak is survived by his three sons: Stephen B. Yurchak and his wife, Doris, of Spinnerstown, Daniel J. Yurchak and his wife, Joanne, of Deerfield Beach, FL, and Thomas A. Yurchak and his wife, Deborah, of Perkasie; six grandchildren; two sisters: Ann Rosario, of Frederick, MD, and Elizabeth Hall, of Los Angeles, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Metro Yurchak; a sister, Mary Follweiler; and five step-brothers: John, Tony, William, Daniel, and Andrew Kinn.

A visitation will be held from 6 -7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 N. Main St., Sellersville, PA 18960 and from 10 -11 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, followed by his funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
