Obituary for Walter Alfred Wied

Walter A. Wied, 91, of Sellersville, passed away Sunday, May 9, 2021, in the Community at Rockhill, West Rockhill Township.

Born in Sellersville, he was the son of the late Karl and Emily (Haller) Wied. Walt was a 1947 graduate of Sell-Perk High School.

Mr. Wied was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in Germany during peacetime from 1951-1953.

Walt had been employed for 43 years as a crane operator and maintenance supervisor by the Reading Railroad, then Conrail, and later Septa.

Currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ridge Valley, Walt was formerly a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Almont.

A lifetime member of both Great Swamp Fish and Game Club and the North Penn Gun Club, both of Quakertown, Walt was also a past president at Great Swamp. He was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post #255, and a long-time member of VFW Forrest Lodge Post #245 and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1539, all of Sellersville.

An avid fisherman and hunter, Walt had always especially looked forward to the annual trip to Potter County during deer season. He had also bowled in a Wednesday night couples league at Earl-Bowl Lanes.

Casino trips and a daily playing of the PA Lottery were some of his other favorite pastimes. He had also enjoyed many cruises with his late companion, Sara Jane Kulp.

Mr. Wied is survived by his three sons: Walter Jay Wied, of Sellersville, Jon Karl Wied and his wife, Kimberly, of Hatboro, Jeffrey Alan Wied and his wife, Renee, of Green Lane; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Esther Mae Wied, of Franklin, NC.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Karl and Otto Wied, and a sister, Emma Schluben, and their spouses; and two companions, Donna Cramer and Sara Jane Kulp.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 14, in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 N. Main Street, Sellersville, PA 18960, where a viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Interment with military honors will follow in Jerusalem Union Cemetery, Almont.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Wied’s name may be made to the American Legion Post #255 Building Fund, 75 N. Main Street, Sellersville, PA 18960.
