Obituary for Gertrude S. Mathewson

Gertrude S. Mathewson, of Schwenksville, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2019, in Phoenixville Hospital, Phoenixville. She was 94.

She was the beloved wife of the late Donald E. Mathewson for 56 years until his death in 2007.

Born in Syracuse, New York, she was the daughter of the late Wheeler Abel Smith and Alice Marion (Connell) Smith.

Mrs. Mathewson was a homemaker.

Since 2009, Gertrude had been a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Harleysville.

As a younger woman, Mrs. Mathewson had been active with several civic and church organizations. She had also always maintained a keen interest in politics.

Along with her husband, Gertrude had enjoyed traveling in the United States in their RV. She had especially enjoyed their international trips to Austria, England, Spain, Scotland, Portugal, Mexico, Jamaica, and Bermuda.

A talented bridge player, Gertrude had also enjoyed square dancing and doing puzzles. Watching vintage movies, reading, and listening to Big Band and church music were other favorite pursuits.

Early goals to be a dietician were never realized, but Gertrude always maintained a firm interest in nutrition, resulting in family favorites, including pot roast, meatloaf, and bake-from-scratch cakes.
