Obituary for Joseph H. Cloonan

Joseph H.   Cloonan
Joseph H. Cloonan, of Richlandtown, formerly of Dublin, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Phoebe Richland Health Care Center, Richlandtown. He was 85.

He was the beloved husband of Virginia “Ginny” (Alibrandi) Cloonan for 57 years.

Born and raised in Oswego, New York, he was the youngest of six children born to the late Thomas and Iva (Gokie) Cloonan.

Mr. Cloonan was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served for four years during the Korean War.

Joe received a Bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, New York. He earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Syracuse University and later spent a year in advanced studies at the University of Virginia.

Mr. Cloonan served for 39 years in progressively higher positions with the Federal Internal Revenue Service in Syracuse, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Kansas City, Missouri; Cincinnati, Ohio; Andover, Massachusetts; and Philadelphia. He dedicated himself to prompt and effective service to all taxpayers and superior performance and innovative operation in the organizations under his direction. After fifteen years at the Philadelphia IRS Center, he retired in 1999.

Following his retirement, Joe volunteered his time as a mediator of Landlord-Tenant, Small Claim, and Criminal cases for the Philadelphia Municipal Court.

Mr. Cloonan was an active member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hilltown.

Joe had enjoyed golf, jogging, and sail boating.

In addition to his beloved wife Ginny, he is survived by his seven children, whom he loved dearly, Loraine Paradis (Carey), of Skowhegan, Maine; Sharon Cloonan (Betty), of Sellersville; Joseph T. Cloonan (Kimberly), of Perkasie; Maureen Greenwalt (Todd), of Orefield; Suzanne Altner (Richard), of Kintnersville; Kenneth J. Cloonan, of Furlong; and Pauline Friemann (Jason), of Perkasie. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Samantha, Christopher, Jonathan, Zachary, Timothy, Vanessa, Kelleen, Jolene, Ryan, Violet, and Joseph.

He was preceded in death by five siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rte. 152 & Broad Street, Hilltown, PA 18927, where a visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Interment will follow in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Hilltown.
