Beatrice M. Eckert, of the Lutheran Community at Telford, formerly a long-time resident of Sellersville, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, August 18, at her residence. She was 86.

She was the beloved wife of the late Howard W. Eckert, Jr. for 62 years until his death in 2013.

Born in Bethlehem, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Alice (Lapp) Strohl. Bea was a 1946 graduate of Liberty High School, Bethlehem, and later graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing, Bethlehem, in 1949.

Bea began her career in nursing as a private duty nurse. After raising her family, she was employed for 13 years at Grand View Hospital, Sellersville. She then became Director of Nursing at Rockhill Mennonite Community, Sellersville. As Director of Nursing, she helped to establish LifeQuest Nursing Center, Quakertown, retiring after many years.

She was a long-time member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Sellersville, where she had served on Church Council, the Altar Committee, and taught Sunday school.

Along with her husband, Bea was a proud fan of the Nittany Lions, enjoying football season tickets for decades.

The Eckerts participated annually with Sellersville’s Gallery of the Arts and were also involved with the borough’s annual WinterFest celebration. They enjoyed attending all community events.

Bea loved sewing, crafts, and flower gardening. She also liked to go fishing with her husband.

Mrs. Eckert is survived by her two daughters, Donna Balascak and her husband, Dennis, of Coopersburg; Wendy Karamihalis and her husband, Timothy, of Palm Harbor, FL; four grandchildren, Andrew Balascak, and his wife, Kelly, of Coopersburg; Matthew Balascak, and his fiancée, Caitlin, of Durham, NC; Lindsey Karamihalis and Kyle Karamihalis, both of Palm Harbor, FL; one great-grandson, Blake Balascak; and two brothers, Edwin Strohl and his wife, Connie, of Macungie and William Strohl, of Emmaus.

Her funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, August 22, in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville, PA 18960, where family and friends may call from 2:30 p.m. until time of service.

Interment will follow in Sellersville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 25 East Church Street, Sellersville, PA 18960.
