Obituary for George G. Kelly

George G. Kelly, of Sellersville, formerly of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township, on Tuesday, February 12. He was the beloved husband of Virginia J. (Hollowell) Kelly for 59 years. He was 81.

Born in Blackwood, NJ, he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Mildred A. (Fogel) Kelly. George was a 1949 graduate of Simon Gratz High School, Philadelphia.

Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and proudly served in Korea during the Korean War.

George had been employed for 23 years as a production manager for Trotter Pretzels, Hatfield. He later worked in the maintenance department at Perkasie Industries for ten years. Most recently, he had been employed delivering car parts for NAPA Weldon, of Lansdale.

Mr. Kelly was a long-time member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hilltown, where he had served as an usher and, along with his wife, as a sacristan.

A life member of the Sellersville Fire Department, George had served as a firefighter and on the Kitchen, Fruit and Flower, and Placques and Awards committees. At the annual carnival, he always ran the Money Wheel and was the official potato masher for all ham dinners and banquets.

He was also a member of the American Legion Nase-Kraft Post 255 and the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1539, both of Sellersville.

Mr. Kelly had coached Little League and then served as an umpire for the Connie Mack League. He later umpired high school games in the PIAA. George had also volunteered with Greenjackets football.

With his wife, George had enjoyed the annual reunions of his Army 79th Engineering Construction Group.

A jack of all trades, George always had a project, whether woodworking or puttering in his garage. He enjoyed working in his yard, feeding the birds and squirrels, and tending to the wildlife. He was also an avid Notre Dame football fan.

George’s wry wit, twinkling eyes, and impish smile will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his eight children: Kathleen M. Wroblewski and her husband, Eugene, of Green Lane; Virginia P. “Pat” Kelly, of Quakertown; Dianna M. “Dee” Detweiler and her husband, James, of East Greenville; George G. Kelly, Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Souderton; Robert D. “Ron” Kelly and his wife, Kathy, of Sellersville; Samuel J. Kelly and his wife, Jodie, of Quakertown; Timothy S. Kelly and his wife, Lorie, of Perkasie; Mark A. Kelly and his wife, Tammy, of Pennsburg; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and his dog, “Shadow.”

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Lynn Kelly; a brother, Robert Donald Kelly; and two sisters, Kathryn Patricia Turner and Regina Marie Bohley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 20, in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rte. 152 & Broad Street, Hilltown 18927. Family and friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, at the Sellersville Fire Department, 2 North Main Street, Sellersville 18960.
