Obituary for Pauline K. "Polly" (Gerhard) Derstine

Pauline K. “Polly” Derstine, a long-time resident of Sellersville, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township. She was the beloved wife of James W. Derstine, Sr. for 54 years. She was 75.

Born in Obelisk (Montgomery County), she was the daughter of the late Nevin and Lizzie (Krause) Gerhard. She was a 1955 graduate of Souderton High School.

Polly had been employed for 35 years as the head teller of Provident National Bank, which later became Harleysville National Bank, Sellersville.

As a young woman, she had sewed baseballs at home for Dudley Sports. She had also worked as a waitress at the former Beasley’s Restaurant, Perkasie, and Baker’s Restaurant, Harleysville, and in the office at Moyer & Son, Souderton.

Mrs. Derstine was a long-time member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Sellersville, where she had served on the Consistory and taught Sunday school for 25 years.

Polly was also an honor roll member of the Sellersville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. When her sons were young, she had served as a Cub Scout den mother.

Mrs. Derstine loved spending time with her grandchildren and, especially, enjoyed teaching cooking skills to her granddaughters. A woman of quiet and steadfast faith, she read her Bible daily.

In addition to her husband, Polly is survived by her two sons: James W. Derstine, Jr. and his fiancée, Kim Eubanks, of Quakertown; Douglas Derstine and his wife, Kimberly, of Lansdale; five grandchildren: Justin Derstine and his wife, Laura, of Revere; Jessica, Amanda, Matthew, and Jacob Derstine, all of Lansdale; and one sister, Miriam Geiger, and her husband, Stanley, of Woxall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Gerhard.

Her memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, in St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 104 Green Street, Sellersville, PA 18960. Family and friends may call Tuesday at the church, beginning at 10 a.m. until time of service.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
